Water heater repair services

Water heater leak repair

A leak from a fitting, valve or pipe can often be repaired. A leak from the tank itself usually means the tank has failed and the unit needs to be replaced.

Electric water heater repair

No hot water, lukewarm water or a tripped breaker can point to a failed heating element or thermostat.

Gas water heater repair

A pilot light that won't stay lit, a faulty thermocouple or gas control valve, or a burner problem. We repair gas units safely.

Tankless water heater repair

Error codes, cold water in the middle of a shower, or no hot water at all.

Common water heater problems

  • No hot water > A failed heating element or thermostat (electric), a pilot light or gas valve problem (gas), or a tripped breaker

  • Water isn't hot enough > A thermostat set too low, a failing element, or sediment buildup in the tank

  • Water leaking around the tank > A loose fitting or valve may be repairable. A leak from the tank itself means replacement

  • Rumbling or popping noises > Sediment buildup on the bottom of the tank. Flushing may help

  • Rust-colored hot water > The tank may be corroding inside. Replacement is likely

Replacement usually makes sense

  • The unit is over 10 to 12 years old

  • The tank itself is leaking

  • Repairs keep adding up

  • The water runs rusty

Repair usually makes sense

  • The unit is under 10 years old

  • One part has failed, such as a thermostat or element

  • This is the first problem you've had

  • Water is hot but pressure or temperature is off

Water heater leaking? What to do right now

  1. Turn off the water supply to the water heater. The shutoff valve is usually on the cold water pipe above the unit.

  2. Turn off the power, For electric units, switch off the breaker. For gas units, turn the gas control to "off" or "pilot" if you can do it safely.

  3. Don't touch the unit or any electrical device if there is standing water around it.

  4. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas company from outside. Don't call us first.

Water heater installation FAQs

The most common causes are a failed heating element or thermostat on an electric unit, a pilot light or gas valve problem on a gas unit, or a tripped breaker. Call (336) 564-5366 and we'll help you figure out which.

The price depends on the type of water heater and the part that failed. We give you the price before we start work.

If the tank is leaking, or the unit is more than 10 to 12 years old and repairs are adding up, replacement is usually the better value. If it's newer and one part failed, repair may be enough. We'll tell you honestly.

Turn off the water supply and the power or gas to the unit, and call us. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas company first.

Rumbling or popping usually means sediment has built up on the bottom of the tank. Flushing can help, and we'll check whether the tank is still in good shape.
